AN ANALYSIS OF SLANG WORDS IN “SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME” MOVIE DIALOGUES

This Final Project studied the analysis of the slang word in “Spider-Man: No Way
Home” Movie. This research focused on the types and function of slang in the
movie. The objectives of the study were (1) To identify the types of slang words
used by the characters in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” movie, (2) To identify the
function of slang words in Spider-Man: No Way Home” movie, (3) To analyze the
meaning of slang words found in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” movie. The design
this research used descriptive qualitative. The object of this research is Spider-Man:
No Way Home Movie. The instrument of the study were data from the script movie.
There are 40 slang words found according to the data finding. Those finding
classified into the types of slang word based on the theory Allan & Burridge (2006).
Sometimes the slang words finding also just find once on the dialogue of the movie.
So we can see that those are the slang word that have been found in the Spider�Man: No Way Home movie. This are the slang word finding for example “Dude”
type of the slang is Fresh and Creative has meaning “Informal term used to refer to
a male person, often a friend or acquaintance.” And has function to address. Another
example is “Scooby-Doo this shit” categorized as Flippant slang has meaning “A
term When the writers of a film run out of funny and interesting dialogue and resort
to using a pop-culture reference, meaning to solve a problem or figure something

out.” And has function to express impression, “A.KA It’s an acronym to say “Also
Known As.” Categorized as acronym slang and has function to address, “Till” has
meaning “informal abbreviation or contraction of the word “until.” Categorized as
Clipping slang and has function to initiate relax conversation. From 40 data of slang
word in the movie Spider-Man No Way Home, clipping is type of slang word that
the most dominant it is about 43 %. After that Imitative is the second type of Slang
Word that mostly used as the percentage about 33%. Then, it is followed by Flippant
change about 13%, next is Fresh & Creative is about 8% and the last are Acronym,
is about 5%. The functions of using slang word is the focused on all 40 data
containing slang words there is seven functions based on Allan and Burridge’s
theory (2006) and researcher found five functions of using slang word on Spider�Man: No Way Home; 15 slang words which have function To address, 14 slang
words which have function to initiate relax conversation, 6 slang words which have
function to show impression, 3 slang words which have function to humiliate, and
1 slang words which have function to reveal anger. And 1 to show the intimacy. In
this research, the most dominant function of using slang word is to initiate relax
conversation and to address. The finding from the slang word can be used for
teaching vocabulary. It can be one of the alternatives that the students having new
vocabulary, especially slang word. The students more familiar with the English
slang that the native speaker used for the dail conversation.
