Abstract
Organda, Fernando Iftyan Daru, 2024. Characterizing Nordic Deities In Neil
Gaiman’s ‘Norse Mythology’. Final Project, English Education Departement

This study explores the characterization of key figures in Norse Mythology as
retold by Neil Gaiman, focusing on Odin, Thor, and Loki. The analysis reveals
how Gaiman’s interpretation enriches the existing Norse mythological tradition,
providing a contemporary lens through which to view these ancient stories. The
research examines the distinct traits of each character: Odin as the wise and
prophetic All-Father, Thor as the straightforward and honorable warrior, and
Loki as the mischievous and cunning trickster.
Odin embodies wisdom and foresight, sacrificing his eye in his relentless pursuit
of knowledge, while Thor represents the quintessential hero, upholding justice
and integrity with his powerful hammer, Mjollnir. In contrast, Loki's character is
marked by deceit and ambition, leading to chaos and conflict. His complex
personality reflects the darker aspects of human nature, as he manipulates and
challenges the gods, ultimately leading to Ragnarok the cataclysmic end of the
world.
The study also discusses the broader implications of these characterizations for
understanding human behavior and social dynamics. By analyzing these
mythological figures, the research offers insights into the consequences of
wisdom, bravery, deceit, and ambition, which remain relevant in modern
contexts.
Suggestions for further research include a deeper exploration of these characters
through different analytical frameworks and the potential for new retellings that
focus on specific aspects of Norse mythology. The study concludes that
Gaiman’s retelling not only preserves the essence of Norse myths but also invites
readers to reflect on timeless themes that continue to resonate across cultures
and epochs
