Morphology is the branch of linguistics that deals with words, their internal structure,
and how they are formed. The objectives of the research are: 1). To find out the word
formation used in the Techlife Australia Magazine December 2019. 2). To find out
the word formation which most dominant in Techlife Australia Magazine December
2019. Techlife is an Australian general computer magazine, published monthly by
Future Australia which the contents consist of computer hardware and software
reviews and previews, technology news and opinion articles, technical how-to guides,
and a ‘help station’ feature where the magazine‘s contributors provide answers to
technical queries from readers. The writer thought that mastering English is not easy
if the learners are lack of vocabulary especially the new words that related to modern
technology. This research used qualitative method to analyze the data. The result
showed that: there are 145 words which used eight types of word formation processes.
Coinage process takes 2% (3 data); clipping process takes 3% (4 data); backformation
process takes 1% (2 data); conversion process takes 4% (6 data); acronyms and
initialisms processes take 28% (40 data); blending process takes 1% (2 data);
compounding process take 60% (87 data); and reduplication process takes 1% (1
data). It can be seen that compounding is the word formation process mostly used in
Techlife Australia Magazine December 2019. The application types of word
formation in Techlife Australia Magazine December 2019 can be used in vocabulary
teaching and learning.
