Abstract

Tyas, Putri Arnum Ayuning. 15420162. 2019. “The Use of “memorize and
Draw” Game in Reading; A Case of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 02
Jatinegara in Academic Years 2019/2020”. Final Project. English Department,
Faculty of Language and Art Education (FPBS). University of PGRI Semarang.
The First advisor is Dr. Wiyaka, M.Pd the second advisor is Ajeng setyorini,
S.S.,M.Pd.
Key words: Reading, Game, and “Memorize and Draw” Game.
The objectives of the study are: 1) to find out the reading ability of the eighth
grade students of SMP Negeri 02 Jatinegara taught without “memorize and draw”
game. 2) to find out the reading ability of eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 02
Jatinegara taught with “memorize and draw” game. 3) to identify the significant
difference the students‟ reading ability of SMP Negeri 02 Jatinegara taught
without and with “memorize and draw” game.
This study used experimental design. The population of the study was the eighth
grade students of SMP Negeri 02 Jatinegara, Tegal. The researcher took two
classes as subject of the research. 1) as the experimental group and 2) as the
control group. The collect the data the researcher use test as the instrument. The
test consist of multiple-choice type for reading ability
The results of the study know 1) the mean score of pre-test for control group is
63,23 in the range (60-69) it is categorized into inadequate category and the mean
score of post-test is 68,11 in the range (60-69) it is categorized into inadequate
categorize. It can be concluded that the students‟ reading ability taught without
using “memorize and draw” game is inadequate, 2) the mean score of pre-test for
Experimental group is 63,76 in the range (60-69) it is categorized into inadequate
categorize and the mean score of post-test for experimental group is 80,76 in the
range (80-89) it is categorized into good category. It can be concluded that the
students‟ reading ability of taught with using “memorize and draw” game is good,
3) there was a significant difference in the reading ability between the two groups.
It can be seen from t-test that tvalue is higher than ttable (13,064014991>1,997).
Therefore, the null hypothesis (Ho) is reject, while the working hypothesis (Ha) is
accepted.
Based on the result above, the researcher would like to give suggestions; 1) the
teacher should create cheerful and comfortable atmosphere in teaching English in
order to make the students feel interested in studying. 2) the students should use
“memorize and draw” game to build the interaction between teacher to students
and students to the material in learning process.
