This study is about using Genre-Based Approach in teaching writing narrative
texts to improve students writing achievement. The objectives of this final project are
1) to find out the ability to write narrative texts of the tenth grade students using Genre-
Based Approach, 2) to find out the ability to write narrative texts of the tenth grade
students without using Genre-Based Approach, 3) to find out whether or not there is a
significant difference of the ability to write narrative text between the students taught
using Genre-Based Approach and those taught without Genre-Based Approach. In
order to achieve the objective of the research, relevant theorist were referred and
discussed. Narrative Text, Genre-Based Approach, and Teaching Learning Cycle. This
study belongs to experimental results. The subject were tenth grade students of SMK
Cut Nya’ Dien Semarang in Academic Year 2016/2017. The writer took one class as
subject. The class is experimental class (X TB). The number of students 30 students.
The results slowed that the mean score of the pre-test 45.93. The mean score of the
post-test 65.87. The different scores between pre-test and post-test score shows that
there is significant difference of students’ ability in writing narrative text. Based on the
discussions, the writer suggest for the teacher and the students should use the Genre-
Based Approach in teaching and learning writing Narrative Text because it can improve
students’ achievement in writing narrative
