This final project is based on the study which attempted to analyze the
imagery in Shawn Mendes’s selected songs’ lyrics and its contribution in teaching
poetry. Three songs were Senorita, Treat You Better, and There’s Nothing Holdin’
Me Back. The main purposes of this study were to analyze the imagery in song
lyrics, the dominant imagery from the data, the implication of those three songs’
lyrics, and its contribution in teaching poetry. This research is expected to be a
source for Poetry learning activity, to teach imagery (Visual imagery, Kinesthetic
imagery, Organic imagery, and Tactile imagery).
This research is qualitative analysis which analyzed the imagery in Shawn
Mendes’s selected songs’ lyrics using DiYanni, Robert’s theory (2002). The data
of the research were collected by listening, analyzing, and describing. Thus,
coding is used in analyzing the data.
The result of the study was there were only four imageries found in the
study, they were visual imagery, kinesthetic imagery, tactile imagery, and organic
imagery. And there were lots of the contribution in teaching poetry by using song
lyrics in identifying the imagery, they were improving concentration, improving
memory, bringing a sense of community in a group, motivating learning, relaxing
people who are overwhelmed or stressed, making learning fun, and helping people
absorb material.
