This final project is about ideational meaning in the Jakarta Post‘ article
entitled ―Killing Our Children Softly – With Tobacco Smoke ―. The objectives of
the study are (1) To describe the ideational meaning realized in the Jakarta Post‘s
article entitled ―Killing Our Children Softly – With Our Tobacco Smoke.‖, (2)
To identify the most dominant types of process that used in the Jakarta Post‘s
article entitled ―Killing Our Children Softly – With Our Tobacco Smoke.‖, (3) To
find out the contribution of ideational meaning to the teaching of Systemic
Functional Grammar for students. This research used desriptive qualitative
research. The object of this research is the Jakarta Post‘s article entitled ―Killing
Our Children Softly – With Tobacco Smoke.‖ In order to find the ideational
meaning, the researcher using transitivity system. The results of this research
showed that there are five types of processes which realized in the Jakarta Post‘s
article entitled ―Killing Our Children Softly – With Our Tobacco Smoke.‖. They
are material, mental, relational, behavioral,and verbal. After analyzing, the
researcher didn‘t find one types of process, that is existential process. Based on
the research findings, the dominant process are used in the Jakarta Post‘s article
entitled ―Killing Our Children Softly – With Our Tobacco Smoke.‖ is material
process (60%). The last, the contribution ideational meaning analysis in the
teaching of Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) for the students is to be the
reference in the learning process especially for the ideational meaning materials.
