This research aimed at finding out of shadowing technique to improve students‘
speaking ability in terms of accuracy, fluency and comprehensibility of the
students of SMK Tunas Karya Berlian Pati in academic year 2018/2019. In detail,
the objectives of the study are (1) to find out the ability of the tenth grade SMK
Tunas Karya Berlian Pati in speaking English in Recount Text be taught before
using the Shadowing Technique (2) to find out the ability of the tenth grade SMK
Tunas Karya Berlian Pati in speaking English in Recount Text be taught after
using the Shadowing Technique (3) to find out whether there is a significant
difference from the speaking ability in Recount Text between students who are
taught before using the Shadowing Technique and taught after using the
Shadowing Technique. This research included in pre-experimental research
design. The sample was 25 students in the class of tenth grade students of SMK
TKB Pati. The data was collected from students‘ recording. In this research, the
researcher used program of SPSS to analyze the data. After calculating with this
program, it was gotten result that the mean of students speaking score who were
taught before using shadowing technique was 63.64. While the mean of students
speaking score were taught after using shadowing technique was 81.96. It was
strengthened by the calculation, ttest = 7.91, then compared ttable = 1.71 with df
25-1 at significance level α = 5%. These results indicated that ttest > ttable at
7.69 > 1.71. It meant that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the
data obtained significant. Based on the experiment results, shadowing technique
can improve students‘ speaking ability. The suggestion for English teacher is
shadowing technique can be used as an alternative in teaching speaking English
class.
