Abstract

Nafiah, Lailatin.2019. An Analysis of Deixis found in Short Story “A Very Short
Story” by Ernest Hemingway. Final Project, English Education Study Program,
Faculty of language and Arts Education, University of PGRI Semarang. Advisor
1: Dra. T. Sri Suwarti, M.Pd., Advisor 2: Rahmawati S, S.Pd.,M.Hum.
The objectives of this research are; 1) to identify types of deixis found in the
story “A Very Short Story” by Ernest Hemingway, 2) to analyze the meaning of
deixis found in the short story “A Very Short Story” by Ernest Hemingway, and
3) to give contribution in teaching pragmatics.
The research design of this research was descriptive qualitative method. For
collecting the data, this research used documentation method. This research used
short story “A Very Short Story” by Ernest Hemingway as source of data, then
analyzed the sentences using Levinson (1983) theory of deixis.
The researcher found all types of deixis in the story. They included: peson
deixis (third person deixis: they, them, theirs, he, him, his, himself, she, and her);
place deixis (there, preposition of place, home, New York, America, Pordonone,
and Chicago); time deixis (after, before, when, now, evening, night, in the spring,
and three months); discourse deixis (that); and social deixis (absolute social
deixis: the major).
The conclusions of this research are; 1) in this research, there were five types
of deixis that found in story “A Very Short Story” by Ernest Hemingway, 2) to
analyze the meaning of deixis it not only from one sentence, but it must looked at
other sentences in the story and 3) this research can be used as alternative source
in pragmatics classes. This research suggests that students should learn deixis
from a short story, novel, advertisement, and any others, to have a better
understanding of deixis analysis. Then, the lecturers can use a short story, novel,
advertisement, and any others in to analysis deixis in pragmatics classes to make it
easy for the students to understand the lesson.
