Abstract
Literary works are frequently used to express human expression through words,
making literary works one of the unique mediums to express these expressions.
Therefore, this study aims to uncover the factors that make a literary work great
through formalism and defamiliarization theory, furthermore uncovering the impact
of the factors on the construction of the story and its contribution to prose and drama
teaching in Universitas PGRI Semarang. Using a descriptive qualitative research
method, this study describes how the factors of the story entitled The Tell-Tale
Heart according to both formalism and defamiliarization theory contribute to the
construction of the story. The strength of The Tell-Tale Heart lies in its structure
and its imagery within the story.
