Term is a word related to a particular field. There are terms that use similar words
but have different meanings when it comes to a certain field, for example in the
field of beauty. This research discusses beauty terms used in the beauty sector.
The research was aimed at mentioning beauty terms used in the makeup books,
finding out the kind of beauty terms found in the makeup books, and explaining
its contribution for teaching English for Specific Purpose. This research used
qualitative method based on Miles and Huberman’s theory (1994). The object of
this research is beauty terms found in makeup books entitled “Face with a Heart”
written by Chris Scott that was published in 2014 and “The Essence of Beauty”
written by Monica Sood that was published in 2019. The researcher used
semantics approach based on theory of kind of meaning by Wijana and Rohmadi
(2008) which classified the meaning into eight kinds of meaning. They are primer
meaning, lexical meaning, denotative meaning, literal meaning, secondary
meaning, grammatical meaning, connotative meaning, and figurative meaning. As
the result, the researcher found 69 beauty terms which is classified into anatomy,
makeup, makeup tool, makeup application technique, term about makeup, and
makeup mistake. Here, beauty term could be categorized into primer meaning
consisting of lexical meaning, denotative meaning, and literal meaning and also
secondary meaning consisting of grammatical meaning, connotative meaning, and
figurative meaning. Based on the analysis, there are 8 lexical meaning, 15
denotative meaning, 6 literal meaning, secondary meaning, 10 grammatical
meaning, 13 connotative meaning, and 17 figurative meaning. The result of this
research can be a material for teaching English for Specific Purpose which
specialized in the beauty sector. Hopefully, this research can be a reference for
future researchers and become a guideline to develop linguistic world.
