Keywords: idioms; idioms classification; idioms meaning; “Enola Holmes”
movie
One of the topics studied in Lexical studies is idioms. Idiom is considered
difficult to understand because the meaning of idiom is often opaque and cannot
always be translated literally. English movies can be used as interesting learning
media to learn idiom. Through English movies, English learners can find out a lot
of new and hard vocabularies such as slang, phrasal verbs, and idiom.
This final project was aimed to analyze about the types and meanings of
the idioms in the “Enola Holmes” movie. The idioms were classified according to
Fernando's theory as pure idioms, semi-idioms, and literal idioms. The meaning of
the idioms was translated based on the appropriate context in the “Enola Holmes”
movie using relevant online dictionaries.
Based on the analysis, the researcher found 61 idioms from the “Enola
Holmes” movie. According to the classification, there were 25 pure idioms, 20
semi idioms, and 16 literal idioms. The meaning of the idioms was explained
according to the context and presented by including sentences or dialogues in the
“Enola Holmes” movie where the idioms were used. The “Enola Holmes” movie
could be chosen as a media to teach idioms, and this research could contribute as a
reference to study idiom.
