Students in Indonesia study English as foreign language. Many students can write and
read in English, but have difficulty speaking English, including have lack of selfconfidence. Speaking English is something that students must master if they want to
communicate with outsiders. By applying the technique of speaking English one
minute a day, the researcher wished the students to have confidence and improve their
vocabulary and make students accustomed to saying words in English.
The objectives of the study were (1) to find out the extent of speaking performance of
the student who are taught using the one-minute talk technique. (2) to investigate the
extent of speaking performance of the student who are taught without using the oneminute talk technique. (3) to discover whether there are differences in speaking
performance between students who are taught using one-minute talk technique and
those who are taught without using one-minute talk technique. The design of this
research was quantitative-experimental. The population of this research is seventh
grade of SMP N 1 Juwana, and the sample of this research is 7A as experimental class
and 7B as control class. The researcher gave pre-test and post-test to students in the
form of spoken descriptive text with the theme of people or place.
There was significant difference between classes taught using the One Minute Talk
technique and classes taught without the One Minute Talk Technique in the
pronunciation, grammar, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension. That was supported by
the data, in which the mean score of student in Experimental Class was 68,62 and the
mean score of student in Control Class was 53,75, and accepted hypothesis. So, the
teacher must use the technique in teaching speaking because it could help the teacher
convey the material to students and motivate their interest in developing speaking
ability
