Abstract

The objective of the study were : 1) to identify the kinds of illocutionary
acts used by the main character in Fast and Furious 9 movie subtitle. 2) To know
how the kinds of illocutionary act realized the main character in Fast and Furious
9 movie subtitle, 3) to know reason why the kinds of illocutionary acts realized in
Fast and Furious 9 movie subtitle. 4) to explain the contribution the kinds of
illocutionary acts in Fast and Furious 9 movie subtitle to pragmatic teaching
material. This research belongs to qualitative research method for analyzing the
data that was needed.
The data were taken by Fast and Furious 9 movie subtitle through the
maincharacter who is Dominic Toretto utterances. In addition, to analyze
Dominic's utterances, the researcher uses Searle‟s theory. As the result of this
research showed that: first, the researcher found that they are four kinds of the
illocutionary act which are assertive (150 utterances), directive (57 utterances),
commissive (8 utterances), and expressive (11 utterances). Second, the researcher
has realized the meaning of illocutionary acts in various words, phrases, clauses
which then able to convey the story of the movie. Third, the researcher found
there are four reasons that the kinds of illocutionary acts realized in Fast and
Furious 9 movie subtitle. Fourth, based on the findings, the research recommends
that language teachers use popular movies as a tool for enhancing pragmatic
teaching and improving students' communicative skills. Specifically, they should
focus on analyzing illocutionary acts performed by characters in these movies.
