This research discusses the idiomatic expressions used by content creators on
TikTok. The purpose of this study is to explore the meanings, characteristics, and
contributions of idioms to English teaching. The researcher identified 54 idiomatic
expressions in 12 analyzed videos. Qualitative research was employed for this
study. The content shared by TikTok creators serves as the primary data source.
The researcher acted as the human instrument, while a smartphone served as the
non-human instrument. The study involved three main steps: reading, selecting,
and categorizing the data. Adam Makkai's theory was used to classify idioms into
two types: lexemic idioms and sememic idioms. All identified data falls under the
category of lexemic idioms. Within the lexemic idioms, there are five distinct
categories: phrasal verb idioms, tournure idioms, irreversible binomial idioms,
phrasal compound idioms, and incorporating verb idioms. The study found 2
phrasal verb idioms, 19 tournure idioms, 4 irreversible binomial idioms, 26
phrasal compound idioms, and 3 incorporating verb idioms, all aligned with
Adam Makkai's theory. The benefit of this research is that, it can help the readers
understand the meaning and characteristics of idiomatic expressions.
