This final project studied the moral philosophy of Dead Poets Society film
and its contributions toward character education. This research focused on the
moral philosophyof the film and also its contributions toward character education.
The objectives of this study were 1) to find out the moral philosophy of the Dead
Poets Society film, and 2) to find out how the moral philosophy of the film’s
contribute toward character education.The design of the research was descriptive
qualitative research. The material object of this research was the Dead Poets
Society film, directed by Peter Weir (1989). The intruments of the research were
the moral philosophy rubric adapted from Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s nature
education theory and character education rubric adapted from Thomas J.
Lickona’s book, Educating for Character (1991). This research revealed two main
results. First, there are moral philosophy values found in the film, categorized as
educational purpose, educational process, educational principles, and educational
method. These moral philosophy values were mainly performed by Mr. Keating
as the main protagonist in the film who always inserted moral education in his
teachings. Second, the moral philosophy of the film contributed toward character
education as can be seen from the good characters that were present in the film.
